KOTA KINABALU: The pressing need to erase the negative perception towards the spa industry prompted the Jari Jari Training Academy to initiate the formation of the Sabah Therapists Association (STA) last year.Adviser to STA, Datin Jeanette Tambakau said it serves as a platform to promote professionalism and networking, as well as disseminate correct information to the public, particularly parents who may have been misinformed about the industry.

"Working as a spa therapist is recognised and upheld as a decent career in the hospitality industry. It is high time to eliminate the misconception about spa therapy.

"Contrary to public perception, proper spas in the country (including those in Sabah) are not operating as shady joints but are being star-rated by the Government.

"Anybody can be trained to be a spa therapist, regardless of academic qualification, provided the individual is willing to learn and acquire skills," she said.

Objectives of the Sabah Therapists Association (STA):

l Promote greater cooperation, understanding and discussion among therapists on issues beneficial to them

l Produce professional therapists who embrace integrity and a balanced and integrated career

l Share feelings, emotions, problems and perspectives as well as strengthen positive change relating to the profession

l Build a sense of patriotism as well as developing talent and creativity of therapists

l Be a bridge for relaying of important information to all therapists in Sabah

According to Tambakau, STA has over 100 active members and the current Executive Committee consists trainees from Jari Jari Training Academy.

The line-up for 2013-2015 is as follows:

Chairperson: Doreen Maria Gorethy Estrop (Jari Jari Spa)

Deputy Chairperson: Annelley Ladoni (YTL Gaya Island)

Secretary: Rina Afillah Ranchong

Assistant Secretary: Ziera Ezzana Husin

Treasurer: Rozie Balimbing (Chi The Spa Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort)

Committee Members: Ernani Hamis (Sompoton Spa KL), Jurianah Sebin (Hamam Spa Bangsar), Martini Micheal, Ferdawati Jamurak (Trades Johor), Siti Norjawali Sungin (Ka'andaman Spa), Hayati Pindatun & Tiffany Mastella (Chi The Spa Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort).

In an effort to help the less fortunate, members of the Executive Committee offered free massage to the residents of Sri Pritchard in Kinarut and stroke survivors in Kota Kinabalu as their corporate social responsibility (CSR) activity.
