KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the suggestion by creative content players for the entertainment revenue to be invested and utilised for the development of the industry should be considered. The Communication and Multimedia Minister was referring to the entertainment duty imposed on the sale of movie tickets.

"They asked what other way can the industry secure additional funds other than what is being forked out now.

"Can the entertainment revenue be used by the State governments for other purposes other than for the maintenance of drains and roads, such as investing it to assist them.

"I am told that there is no such policy, and they asked whether we could make a new one, which would allow for the entertainment revenue to go back to the industry," he said.

He said this to reporters after opening a forum, 'Hala Tuju, Transformasi Industri Kandungan Kreatif', at Subang near here Thursday.

Ahmad Shabery, noting that other countries such as South Korea had such a policy, said that the Ministry did not see any encumbrance in agreeing with the suggestion.

However, a change in policy at all levels was needed to realise it, he said.

He also stressed that the creative content industry must be developed from the grassroots and not necessarily from the top of the chain, to gain and sustain the support of the local as well as international community.

Meanwhile, he said that the Creative Content Industry Consultative Council would likely begin functioning next year.

"The Ministry is finalising the details including membership and entry conditions. The council would serve as a platform for interactions with industry players.

"It is an ongoing engagement process which must be initiated speedily, because the creative industry concept is undergoing numerous changes and expansions such as in advertisements, applications, games and films," he said.

Earlier, Ahmad Shabery said the forum could serve to identify and find ways to resolve issues, challenges and problems involved in the transformation of the country's creative content industry. – Bernama
