M'sian among six crew missing after tugboat hit by vessel

KUANTAN: A Malaysian is among six crew of a tugboat YTC M5 reported missing after being hit by a freight vessel at 9.1 nautical miles off Tanjung Gelang, near the Kuantan port, Thursday morning.Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Eastern Region chief, First Admiral Datuk Nasir Adam, said there were five Indonesians and a local on the tug boat when it was hit by the vessel at about 5am. "The search and rescue operation started at about 12 noon after being informed by the police at 11.15am. Three MMEA vessels, five divers from the Navy (TLDM), three boats and a bombardier rescue 103 are involved in the search and rescue operation," he told reporters here, Thursday.

"We have recorded a statement from Martin Sembiring, 30, an Indonesian who was one of the crew members who was rescued.

"According to the victim, the boat was on its way to Kuala Pahang from Kuala Terengganu when it was hit by the vessel and he was able to dive into the sea to save himself while the others were inside the cabin," he said.
