Mohd Khairy Abdullah NABAWAN: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Joseph Kurup said a chronic obsession to champion race and insulting other religions should be avoided to ensure racial and religious conflict do not disrupt social integration among Malaysians.

"There should be no quarters who should degrade religious issues which can disrupt the existing unity which Malaysia has now," he said, Wednesday.

Kurup also said that all quarters need to be more sensitive to the weight of their statements to avoid conflict.

He said the success of the nation had been due to the its ability to manage its diverse communities. "Our strong point is that we are smart in managing our diversity," he said during the launching of the Majlis Semarak Rakyat 1Malaysia, here.

Kurup said Malaysians hold true to the unity in diversity call, which has been the core of the country's unity.

However, he said if a nation which does not have the thrust for national unity than the goal to attain a better livelihood will never be achieved.

Without unity, Kurup said Malaysia will have problems in development, including achieving a modern nation status.

Kurup also noted that the recent Budget 2015 is a testimony that the Federal Government will continue to focus on Sabah such as its infrastructure development and poverty eradication.

"RM274 billion in seven main strategies has been allocated to strengthen the people's economic need. The budget is also the final budget under the 10th Malaysia Plan.

"The budget is a clear indication of the government and the Prime Minister's commitment to reduce the government's deficit to ensure a balanced budget by 2020," he said.

He pointed out the drastic drop in the poverty rate in Sabah from 19.7 per cent in 2009 to 8.1 per cent in 2012 has shown that the poverty eradication programme executed by the Chief Minister had been successful.

"I have seen the conditions of Sabahans have improved," he said.
