Alternative to Poring hot springs found
RANAU: The recently-famed Rugading hot spring in Ranau has become a new destination which could complement the existing Poring hot spring, already well-known to tourists across the country. The Rugading hot spring located about 17 kilometres from Ranau town, is being operated by a local, Jamirin Bin Kulangas, 48, who lives in the area where the hotspring sprouts.

Speaking to the media here, Jamirin said the hot spring was actually discovered in the 1960s but only few people, except the nearby communities, knew about its existence.

"Every now and then, we see people looking for the exact location of the hot spring after they were told stories about it from their friends.

Nowadays we see more and more people making their way to the place," he said.

He said, since its opening to public in 1970s, the number of tourists who visited the hot spring has reached 10,000 including foreigners.

According to him, the water, its temperature of the Rugading hot spring is similar to that of Poring hot springs and what makes Rugading more interesting is that it is located near two rivers.

"If compared to Poring, I personally feels the location here is more interesting because the hot spring gushes out very close to Sungai Liwagu and Melout, with the surrounding trees that remains untouched," he said.

Jamirin said, among the amenities that were made available near the hot spring include recreational facilities, bamboo huts, camping site, futsal court, and bamboo chalets for those wanting to stay overnight.

"We also provide activities like jungle trekking and water rafting for more adventurous experience while visiting the hotspring.

But at this moment, equipment for water rafting needs to be provided by the participants themselves.

"The Rugading hot spring is accessible by road, but visitors need to walk by foot for about 500 metres to reach the exact location. So far we are charging RM4 to RM10 as entrance fee ," he said.
