Labuan police station is among country's top 5
LABUAN: The island's main police station has been named the country's top five. It is now eligible to vie for the top of the league under Category E.Recently, the panel of judges, comprising the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF), Bukit Aman and National Unity and Integration Department came to appraise the standards of the station's effectiveness and efficiency as well as its approach in bringing down the crime index through public cooperation.

Besides the Labuan town police station, the other Big Five were Ulu Choh, Labis, Segamat from Johor, Kg Baru, Penang and Sekama in Kuching. Out of the 380 police stations, 172 are in Category E.

According to MCPF VP Datuk Kamaruddin Md Ali, the objective of the league was to measure the best National Key Results Area (NKRA) in reducing crime.

"By having this ranking, it sharpens their competitiveness to a higher level. With cash incentives for the top three winners and the fourth and fifth with certificates, it motivates and develops their cohesiveness to manage their respective areas," he said in his address to the police and village security committee members.

The champion of the league stood to win RM1,000 for every cop in the station. The runners-up RM500 and RM250 for third placed.

He added that the police needed the cooperation from the public to reduce crime rate and 45 per cent of the crime was committed by drug addicts. Therefore, parents need to monitor their children.

In this respect, the police had formed Amanita to reach out to women.

Officer in charge of the Labuan police station, Inspector Sukvinderjeet Singh briefed the panelists on the strength and achievement.

Year-on-year, the crime index had reduced by 33 per cent from 92 to 62 cases, whereas violent crime had come down by 40 per cent and property theft down by 31 per cent.

With 52 cops in the rank and file, covering 15 sq km and population of 30,100, it had organised 32 High Profile Policing (HPP) activities. It also had liaison officers in schools.

As part of the National Blue Ocean Strategy, it had collaborated with the Malaysian Armed Forces, Civil Defence Department (JPAM), Labuan Corporation and the Lions Club. The latter was to raise the awareness of drug abuse among youths.

After the presentation, the panelists had a closed door meeting with the village security committee members for a direct dialogue and feedback.

DSP Sabri Bahazin, Commercial Crime Chief, received the visitors on behalf of OCPD Supt Adzhar Othman who was away at the Sabah Police Contingent HQ.
