PETALING JAYA: The two-day regional forum "Jinn and Sihr in Medicine" to be held at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) that has stirred controversy is meant to be an academic discourse, its organisers insist.Event moderator Dr Supyan Hussin said the forum's purpose was to gather information regarding healing practise in Islamic complementary medicine from stakeholders, practitioners and patients.

"We do not support black magic but must be prepared to deal with it and to curb it legally," he said.

"We have 150 registered participants to date, consisting religious scholars, doctors, Islamic complementary medical practitioners and academic researchers."

The forum, reportedly organised by UKM's Social Science and Humanities Faculty, would serve as an avenue where international faith healers would share their experience in supernatural.

The forum scheduled for Nov 19 to 30, is organised in collaboration with the Federation of Islamic Medicine Practitioners' Association (Gappima) and UK-based Professional Islamic Support and Nature Group (Pisang).

The faculty, however, later denied it was the organiser following public outcry.

Several doctors were also against the supernatural approach, stressing it had no place in the modern healthcare system.

The doctors explained modern healthcare was based on evidence-based medicine ad that supernatural approaches needed to be measured before being considered to be practised on a patient.

Dr Supyan said the doctors have their rights to voice their opinions but the forum would still go on.

The picture of a Health Ministry officer, which was seen on the poster promoting the event also caused a stir.

The poster stated Dr Hafizah Amanulla was to represent the Ministry.

The ministry's name was also reflected under Dr Hafizah's name but later removed.

A ministry spokesperson, however revealed Dr Hafizah did not received permission to attend the forum as its representative.

Dr Supyan clarified Dr Hafizah was invited as she was a Gappima member.

"Government servants are aware of what they can and cannot say in public," he said.
