SEMPORNA: The Pulau Omadal Women Association's (Wapo) new turtle hatchery centre is seen as a sign that the association is serious in its conservation efforts. Its Chairlady Roziah Jalalid said the association wished to protect the turtle eggs from falling into the hands of predators and smugglers.

She said the association would be organising awareness campaigns aimed at motivating the villagers on the island to ensure the population of turtles in Semporna is preserved.

"Wapo wishes to thank 1Malaysia For Youth (1M4U) for being our main sponsor by contributing monetary aid in ensuring the success of this campaign," she said.

A total of 28 members of Wapo, 12 1M4U volunteers and 70 villagers took part in various activities such as beach cleaning to facilitate turtle landings.

Also present were Tawau Wildlife Officer Mohd Soffian Abu Bakar and Kampung Omadal Hujung Village Security and Development Committee Chairman Jimlan Sabtuhari.

Roziah said, overall, the programme managed to foster the spirit of unity and responsibility among villagers and encouraged them to participate in the conservation efforts on the island.

Among others, Wapo, which was established in 2010 and officially registered in 2012, had been actively producing and selling pandan-based handicrafts with 10 per cent of the proceeds channelled to the Conservation Unit Fund to support turtle conservation efforts in Pulau Omadal.
