KOTA KINABALU: Consumer Development and Community Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad (pictured at centre) with some of the operators of Kedai Rakyat Borneo Mart, latest government initiative to assist the rakyat to cope with the increasing prices of goods through creation of chain shops to sell especially controlled items at the fixed controlled prices and other goods at market prices, in a ceremony held at her Ministry in Wisma Wanita here Wednesday. The 20 operators, who would start operating the shops in their respective areas throughout Sabah including Beluran and Pensiangan, would complement the three currently in operations in and around here.

Jainab, in her speech, expressed confidence that the Kedai Rakyat Borneo Mart which is a smaller scale of operations and shop size than the Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia would be able to solve the problems of traders selling goods at excessively high prices, particularly at the remote areas in the State.

She said this is because the Kedai Rakyat Borneo Mart would get their supplies, including for controlled items, directly from the source and the transportation is provided for bringing their items from the supply source to the respective by Harbour Link company which is also joining in this initiative.

The transportation company concerned would bring along goods meant for Kedai Rakyat Borneo Mart during its routine of transporting of goods for other shops in their respective areas where the said chain shop is operating and thus would save the operators concerned in terms of transportation charges.

She said she finds transportation charges is used by traders particularly in the remote areas as an excuse to increase the prices of their respective goods, which may include controlled priced essential items.

She said the Ministry would monitor the performance and effectiveness of the 23 Kedai Rakyat Borneo Mart operations before making any plans to expand it further next year, adding it has plans to open up about 200 such shops throughout the State.

The Ministry will also ensure that there would be no problem in terms of supply of goods including essential items for these shops.
