KUALA LUMPUR: The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry wants more registered para-counsellors to provide counselling services to society. Its Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim said at present there are only about 5,000 para-counsellors who were registered under the Malaysian Board of Counsellors (LKM), which was insufficient to meet the needs of the Malaysian population of 30 million.

"With the Malaysian population which is constantly increasing and the many social and psychological ailments, the Ministry feels there is a need for trained para-counsellors to reduce the burden on existing counsellors.

"Which is why we want to encourage more people to become voluntary para-counsellors to help the Ministry provide counselling services more effectively," she told the media after officiating the Federal Territory Excellence in Women Entrepreneurs Forum 2014 here Thursday.

She said the presence of para-counsellors would help overcome problems like bullying among students, child abuse, domestic problems as well as stress.

However, Rohani said members of the public who were interested to become para-counsellors needed to undergo basic counselling skills training under the Malaysia Social Institute first.

Commenting on the Federal Territory Excellence in Women Entrepreneurs Forum 2014 Rohani said it could encourage entrepreneurial activities among knowledgeable women who could compete locally as well as globally. – Bernama
