MACC probes allegation of bribery to get 'Datuk'

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will conduct an investigation into a statement by a businessman from China that he had paid about US$100,000 (RM336,500) for Barisan Nasional (BN) politicians to get the title "Datuk". Director of MACC's Investigation Division, Datuk Mohd Jamidan Abdullah, said the MACC would not compromise over requests for and giving of bribes. He said the claim by the Chief Executive of CAA Resources, Li Yang, 27, could jeopardise the name and image of the palace and that there were possibly middlemen who tried to solicit for money from businessmen.

"The MACC would have a meeting with Li to get further information on the case," he said in a statement Friday.He said the MACC would be firm if there were any bribes from businessmen to facilitate business operations. On Thursday, an Internet news portal quoted a report by New York Times which said Li gave bribes to certain parties so that political party members would get the title 'Datuk' to facilitate mining operations in Bukit Besi, Terengganu. According to the report, Li claimed to have done so as part of his plan to "build ties" with politicians and the royalty.
