KOTA KINABALU: State Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid urged relevant authorities to look into the possibility of replicating China where it is compulsory to bring tourists to certain places. In this case, she was referring to assisting locals in the art industry. And for that to happen, tourists need to be brought to local art galleries.

"In China, a fine is affixed on tourist guides who fail to bring tourists to certain destinations. I think this is a good idea to be implemented here."

Jainab was speaking at an event, organised by the University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF), at the Centre for Arts and Design, here, recently.

It was an art exhibition featuring works of 18 artists from the Faculty of Creative Arts and Multimedia.

Jainab, who officiated at the event, also mentioned about efforts to display local artworks at the two airports here.

She also called on government and non-government organisations to be supportive cheerleaders, but on top of that, also show their intentions through their actions, which is through purchasing local artwork to be distributed as tokens of appreciation, gifts and hung on office walls. This will indirectly help promote Sabah to the world, added Jainab.

Among the benefits of visual art includes improving socio economy, especially related to tourism as well as small and medium industries.

In addition to this, it plays an important role in communicating locals' message about the tourism industry and impacting people in an unfathomable way.

She praised UCSF's efforts to support the Government's goals to transform Sabah into a popular tourist destination, drawing people through images and imagination (creativity) that are capable of stealing people's hearts.

Art, Culture and Uniqueness will be part of the state's reputation that will woo people from abroad. In fact, activities tied to these will be further developed.

She was impressed with UCSF artists' accomplishments as their journey to success started from zero. Words of encouragement were given by Jainab to share their work to the world.

Among those present were UCSF Vice Chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Ghazally Ismail, and Deputy Vice Chancellor, Dr Dayang Aminah Ali.
