UMS must stay united and focused, says TYT
KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) must stay united, focus on integrity and increase productivity to achieve national as well as international excellence.Head of State Tun Dr Juhar Mahiruddin explained this is because universities contribute towards the success of the country.

"It is not a place to fight for your own self-interest or any factions. Public interest should overcome your personal interest," he said.

Juhar said this during the university's 16th Convocation Ceremony at its Chancellor Hall, here, Saturday.

"I would also like to remind everyone to focus on the development of human capital, apart from improving researches and offering professional services which benefit the people, State and nation.

"All these should be done professionally for the national interest and not for the benefit of any individuals or political factions," he said.

According to him, a university acts as a sign of civilisation and the community's high intellect.

The best university, he explained, would produce an impact and offer solutions towards the polemics that exist among the community, be it structural or otherwise.

Therefore, he said universities should provide new ideas not only among its people but to the public as well.

"Knowledge plays an important key in changing an individual and the community as whole, thus the university will achieve a higher value," he said.

He then stressed the importance of knowledge and that one must not only explore it but appreciate it as well.

"We have produced knowledgeable individuals from various universities but it does not mean that we acquire everything. Instead, the country requires specialists for every different kind of fields for its future benefit," he said, expressing his satisfaction in UMS for their effort in making it well-known throughout the State.

More than 4,000 graduates will be receiving their scrolls throughout the ceremony.
