N Korean among fatal mining explosion victims

KUCHING: Police have identified a 29-year-old North Korean as among the trio who perished in a coal mine explosion in Sarawak Saturday.Pang Chung Hyok died along with 36-year-old Tun Tun Win from Myanmar and an Indonesian only known by a single name of Kardianto, 38, in the incident that took place at the mine, near Pantu, Sri Aman, about 130 km from here.Sri Aman police chief, DSP Mat Jusoh Mohamad Sunday said the trio died after a faulty fan caused a short circuit that ignited sparks to a gas-filled tunnel which exploded at about 9am on Saturday.ADVERTISEMENT "Our investigation has so far revealed that other than the three who died, 29 other workers were injured when the explosion occurred inside the 69-metre long tunnel," he said.From the number who survived, he said nine were identified to be Indonesians, six Myanmars, five from China, two Bangladeshis and seven North Koreans.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

Mat Jusoh said 25 of those injured were referred to the Sarawak General Hospital due to the seriousness of their injuries while four others were treated at the Sri Aman District Hospital.He said the mine had been in operation for about eight years and at the latest count engaged 119 workers, who were mostly foreigners. – Bernama
