SANDAKAN: Seven more tsunami early detection systems will be installed in Sabah, making it a total 13, said Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Ewon Ebin. He said currently, six tsunami early detection systems were already in place and another seven more costing a total of RM3.2 million would be ready by next year.

Speaking to reporters after closing the Sandakan Tsunami Practical Training programme at Kampung Sim-Sim here on Saturday, he said throughout the country 17 such system had been put in place while 18 coastal cameras had been installed at strategic locations around the country.

On the training, Ewon said it improved the level of preparedness, especially among people living on the water village here, in the event of a tsunami threat.

According to him, the Malaysian Government decided to install the system and further develop the tsunami early warning system in 2005 following the deadly tsunami in December 2004 that left about 230,000 people dead in several countries around the Indian Ocean.

The disaster had opened the eyes of the Malaysian Government because also among those who perished included 68 Malaysians, hence the commitment to develop on the warning system, he said.

About 637 villagers took part in the training programme.
