Rotary donates RM9,000 to charity groups
KOTA KINABALU: Two non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and a welfare institution each received a donation of RM3,000 as a Rotary Community Service Project in conjunction with the inaugural 2014 Kota Kinabalu Rotary Institute, Sunday. The beneficiaries were the Sabah Society for the Deaf, Sabah Thalassaemia Society (STS) and Sabah Cheshire Home. On hand to receive the contributions from Rotary International (RI) First Lady, Corinna Huang from Taiwan were the Principal of the School for the Deaf, Regina Wong, STS President Francis Mujim and Home Manager Jennifer Liew, respectively.

(Corinna's husband, Gary Huang is the current World President of Rotary International).

Chairperson of the 2014 Kota Kinabalu Rotary Institute Spouse Programme Organising Committee, Datuk Naomi Chong Set Mui said the charitable deed was an integral part of the Spouse Programme (for wives of Rotarians) while their husbands were engaged in the Rotary Institute which began on Nov 19 at the Sutera Harbour Resort. Some 277 Rotary spouses from 16 countries participated in the programme.

Speaking at the gathering of Rotary Spouses, Corinna said she was touched by the performances of the special children, and led the ladies in saying "Hooray" for them in a show of appreciation.

"You have done a good job in getting the children from the three organisations to come and entertain us. We really enjoyed ourselves," she told the Kota Kinabalu Rotary Institute Spouse Programme Organising Committee.

Other distinguished ladies present included Letty Tumangan from the Philippines (wife of the Director of Rotary International, Guiller Tumangan), Grace Liu from Taiwan (wife of RI District 3500, Past District Governor Liu Chi-Tien), Nasreen Ara Surat Amin from Bangladesh (future First Lady of RI District 3281) and Yong Len Nyuk from Sabah (wife of RI District 3310 Governor Elect, Philip Chong Mau Kiong).

Adviser to the Spouse Programme Organising Committee, Datin Kalimah Aucasa commended Naomi and her dedicated team for the hard work put in over the last few months of preparation to make the spouse programme and community service project a great success.

"I wish to make a vote of thanks to all our sponsors and donors for their immense support in one way or another. Without their generous contribution, our project would not be possible," she said.

Of special mention were the main sponsor McDonald's (burgers and goodies for the children); RI District 3310 First Lady, Hjh Norzan Tanseri Hj Bujang; RI District 3281 Governor Safina (Bangladesh); Kim Teck Cheong; Shereen (spouse of RI District 3282 Past District Governor Anis Mir Anisuzzaman, Bangladesh); Rotary Club of Titiwangsa of RI District 3300, Malaysia; and Rotary Club of Phrapradeng of RI District 3330, Thailand, among others.

In response, Naomi attributed the success of the programme and project to having a good team to run the show.

"Teamwork is the word. The other core people are Datin Kalimah as adviser, Co-Chairperson of the Organising Committee, Christina Lo (Past President of the Rotary Club of Luyang), the Secretary Emma Aziz (current President of the Rotary Club of Penampang) and Treasurer Pauline Lo (member of the Rotary Club of Luyang," said the ex-Senator in acknowledging the roles of the respective team players.
