KUALA LUMPUR: The issue on the poor command of the Malay language among non-Malay students is among motions to be debated by Wanita Umno at the movement's general assembly this Wednesday.Wanita Umno executive secretary Noorhaiza Mariena Mat Ramli said the issue needed to be emphasised as Malay was the main medium of language in Malaysia and symbolised the people's identity.

"The Malay language should be upheld and used in the education system.

"The people of various races, especially students, should master the Malay language," she said here Monday.

The general assemblies of the three Umno wings – Wanita, Youth and Puteri - will be held on Wednesday at the Putra World Trade centre (PWTC) here.

Noorhaiza Mariena said the call for the abolishment of the Sedition Act would also be another issue to be discussed by the movement at the assembly, as well as on social and economic issues, and religious issues.

Meanwhile, political analyst Dr Chandra Muzaffar said the motion on mastering of the Malay language by Wanita Umno was apt in an effort to further uphold the national language.

He said the command of the Malay language was declining not only among the non-Malays, but also the Malay community themselves.

"Among the young people, for example, some of them neglect the national language and they include the Malay students themselves," he added.

He said countries like China and Korea were proactive in getting their people to master English, but they remained proud and did not neglect their mother tongue.

"In our effort to enhance proficiency of the English language, the Malay language, which is the national language, should not be forgotten.

"It is not only a language which symbolises identity, but also a language of communication which serves as a bride to forge closer relations among the people of various races in the country," he added.

Chandra also said those who were not proficient in Malay should not be criticised, but assisted by encouraging them to master the language. – Bernama
