SMK Kemabong first to win PitchBorneo title
KOTA KINABALU: SMK Kemabong made history of sorts on Sunday by being the first school to win in the PitchBorneo programme that rewards RM20,000 to the best business ideas by an individual or group in the State. A group, comprising Mitchelle Perera, Rexzueline Ambing and Azryen Linus, who represented the school, received the fund after their innovative idea called "Paddy Pen" impressed the jury.

SMK Kemabong, Tenom, was among three schools, the others being SM St Joseph, Tuaran, and SM St Michael, Penampang, which took part in this year's edition of PitchBorneo.

Organised by Sabah Techpreneur Association (Sata), PitchBorneo for the first time was opened to students in collaboration with the Sabah Invention and Innovation Exhibition (Sindex).

PitchBorneo is a re-branded version of Sabah Got Ideas which was launched in 2011. Sabah is the only State that has successfully implemented the programme on its own.

The SMK Kemabong group was among the 10 winners of the RM20,000 fund from the State Government, provided through the Resource Development and Information Technology Ministry.

The winners were among 24 other individuals and groups which also qualified for the finale held at the Promenade Hotel here.

Resource Development and Information Technology Minister Datuk Siringan Gubat, who presented the cheque to all the winners, was proud of the achievement made by the schools and others including groups from the e-Desa programmes.

He hoped their success would encourage more to take part in this programme in the future, urging the organiser to compile all ideas, especially the innovative ones, since the programme started in 2011, into a book for the record and reference by others interested to venture into entrepreneurship.

"Sata should also publish the winning ideas on its official website to help promote the product to a wider spectrum as well as to encourage the use of information and communication technology (ICT) among people especially in Sabah."

"This programme, under the Ministry, has successfully created entrepreneurs and will continue to do so among its participants, to help them to truly turn their business ideas into a reality."

"I hope those who have won the funding from the programme will make full use of it to move further in their respective field," he said.

Among the 100 who attended were the Ministry's Permanent Secretary Datuk Bruno Vun and Sata President Severinus Kitingan.
