Public urged to join 'urban farming' programme

SERDANG: The limited land is not an excuse for the public, especially residents of high rise buildings, not to engage in agricultural activities.Agriculture officer Azlini Zuraida Endut of Urban Farming Division, Putrajaya Agriculture Department, urged those interested in joining the programme to register with the Ministry.

"Our officers will visit them to advice on the types of plants to be grown. Usually, they will recommend vegetables, herbs and spices to supplement the income of participants," she told Bernama at Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism Show (Maha) 2014 here, Monday.

Azlini Zuraida said in addition to the types of plants and farming concepts, the participants will also be provided with fertilisers and seedlings.

The housing category (individual) comprise of the edible garden, mushroom cultivation and mini fertigation while the housing project category is divided into organic/conventional farm and open fertigation.

The institution category comprise of garden, aquaponics, mini fertigation and the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT).

Meanwhile, Assistant Director of Padi, Plant Industry and Floriculture Division, Serdang Commodity Development Centre, Muhammad Adli Salihin Samsudin said city farming also encourages the use of recycled materials such as food packets, bottles and furniture.

"Agriculture can also help to preserve the environment. The use of waste materials in agriculture will prevent the collection of water for the breeding of larvae."

Muhammad Adli said the use of recycled materials was aimed at educating the public that farming does not need a high cost and can also beautify the environment. – Bernama
