RM11.5m fags seized by Customs

JOHOR BAHARU: Johor Customs foiled an attempt to smuggle in 986,000 white cigarette packs, valued at RM11.511 million inclusive of tax, at Tanjung Pelepas Port here last Saturday. Customs Director-General Datuk Seri Khazali Ahmad said all the 'Modeng' branded cigarettes that was brought in by a ship was detected by a customs personnel who was conducting inspection on two containers onboard at about 10.30 am.

"An inspection on the importer's address in the city showed that it was the address of another company which was operating logistics business," he told reporters at Menara Kastam, here Monday.

He said further investigation revealed the ship was registered in France and entered Tanjung Pelepas Port from Singapore Port.

"We believe all the cigarettes are for the local market," he said, adding that the consfication was the biggest in the state so far this year. – Bernama
