P'pang tyre shop murder: Local man claims trial

KOTA KINABALU: A 44-year-old Dusun claimed trial in the High Court Tuesday to killing a local Chinese man. Zakaria Laih entered the plea when he was brought up before High Court Judge Ravinthran Paramaguru.Ravinthran fixed May 11-15 next year for Zakaria's trial during which about 20 witnesses are expected to be called.

Zakaria is accused of murdering one Hei Kok Meng, 55, at 5.30pm on April 12 this year inside the office of Kedai Tayar Big Wheel at Mile 51/2, Jalan Penampang.

He could be sentenced to death if found guilty under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Luke Ressa Balang appeared for the prosecution while Zakaria was represented by assigned counsel Dominic Ghani.

Meanwhile, in another court, a 31-year-old Kadazan father of two was sent to prison for nine years and ordered given four strokes of the cane for robbing a woman.

Darrel Ijoy Bonok pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Indra Ayub to robbing one Christabel Thong of her bag containing a MyKad, three ATM cards and money. The crime took place at 4.50pm on May 16 this year at the Grand Millenium area in Penampang.

The court heard that while Christabel was walking at the said place when an unknown man approached her, snatched her handbag and fled from the scene.

But Christabel managed to identify Darrel as the person who robbed during the identification parade.

DPP Aida Fatima Datuk Abdul Jabar prosecuted the case while Darrel was not represented.
