Rape and sodomy trial of senior cop rescheduled

KOTA KINABALU: The Sessions Court re-scheduled the trial of a senior Malay police officer, charged with three counts of raping an underage local girl and another count of sodomising her, to Jan 12-15 next year.Sessions Court Judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad fixed the date for Deputy Superintendent of Police Rohaizat Abdul Ani, 54, who was supposed to go on trial Tuesday.Rohaizat is accused of raping the 13-year-old girl on three separate occasions at 3.30pm on Feb 1, at 10am on Feb 2 and between 7 and 8.30pm in May 2012 at the Tang Dynasty Hotel, here.

Each charge under Section 376 (1) of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 20 years and liability of whipping on conviction.Rohaizat is also accused of sodomising the girl at 3.30pm on Feb 1, 2012 and for the offence under Section 377B of the Penal Code, he could be punished with a jail term of up to 20 years and fine on conviction.He had, on Aug 2, 2013, claimed trial to all four counts and was released on a bail of RM10,000 with RM5,000 deposited on each count in one local surety.Rohaizat, currently attached to the Federal Reserve Unit in Penang, was not present in court but with permission.

Senior Federal Counsel Jamil Aripin and Deputy Public Prosecutor Ernie Effizah Idris appeared for the prosecution while counsel Zahir Shah, Ram Singh, Timothy Daut and Y S Lo defended Rohaizat.About 20 witnesses would be called during the hearing.
