IPOH: MIC leaders have accused Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri G. Palanivel of betraying the trust of voters in Cameron Highlands by not acting on information he had concerning illegal land clearing in his constituency.MIC strategic director S. Vell Paari and Taman Mujur MIC branch chairman V.T. Rajen, said their party president owed the people an explanation why he had not done anything despite knowing that offences were being committed.

Vell Paari said he was puzzled that Palanivel did not act on the information he possessed earlier, adding that if he done so, the authorities could have stepped in, averted the disaster and saved lives. "I am curious to know who these so-called masterminds are that even the minister seemed unable to act.

"The voters in Cameron Highlands have entrusted Datuk Seri (Palanivel) to safeguard their interests and welfare. If he chooses to remain silent, fearing repercussions to his position, then he has betrayed the voters' trust."

Vell Paari was responding to a statement by Palanivel on Monday that he knew the masterminds behind the mess on the highlands and that he had photographic evidence of the culprits involved.

Palanivel declined to reveal their identities, saying he had furnished the law enforcement authorities with the evidence.

Vell Paari said Palanivel must realise he was not answerable to the masterminds, but to the people who voted him as their member of parliament, and the prime minister who had appointed him as a minister.

"His silence is disappointing. He must explain the reasons behind the silence." Rajen said he, too, was baffled as to why his president could not say much or disclose more about the masterminds.

"As the minister and MP, he has sworn an oath to the king to not only discharge his duties with care but to also safeguard the country. "He has admitted to having known that hanky-panky was taking place and possessed photographic evidence, yet he remained quiet.
