KUALA LUMPUR: Puteri Umno Chief Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin has asked for the people not to compare her to her predecessors, especially the first Puteri chief, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. Mas Ermieyati, who took on the post in the past year, said it was inappropriate to compare leadership styles as the era and challenges were different for both.

"Azalina faced a different set of challenges then because the Puteri movement was newly established. All eyes were on Puteri when it was first set up because many wanted to see its role.

"The wing has a far bigger challenge today. Puteri Umno is now made up 80 per cent new faces who are still green and do not fully understand the party's struggles," she said during Puteri Umno assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) here Wednesday.

Mas Ermieyati said she needed to clarify this matter because her previous approach of keeping silent led to the public misperception that she was not doing anything.

Therefore, she urged the people to be fair and give her time to prove her capability in leading the Puteri movement.

Meanwhile, The Puteri Umno movement criticised Muslim political leaders who do not protect the sanctity of Islam, but were more concerned with pursuing their political and personal agenda.

Mas Ermieyati, said these leaders were afraid of losing support if they were too vocal in defending Islam, despite being well aware of attempts by religious extremists to create tensions.

"Religious liberalisation, which condones lesbianism, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT), clearly violates the faith of the Muslims, and religious pluralism, which regards all religions, including Islam, the same, is spreading.

"Are we only capable of watching all these and allow this dangerous thinking to destroy the Muslim community?" she said.

Mas Ermieyati said the movement supported whatever decisions by the government and actions by Islamic religious institution in preserving the dignity and sanctity of Islam.

"We appreciate the government's firmness in deciding to appeal at the Federal Court on a decision by the Court of Appeal in declaring Section 66 of the Syariah Criminal Enactment (Negeri Sembilan) 1992, which prohibits Muslim men from dressing and behaving like a woman, as unconstitutional.

"It was done to protect the interests of Islam," she added.– Bernama
