KUALA LUMPUR: The introduction of online membership registration will not only increase the Umno membership but also raise the number of voters (who support Umno) in future, said Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin.Describing the move as wise and timely, she said it would definitely attract greater participation and realise the aspiration of the younger generation. "It will also solve the various problems faced by applicants, especially youths, such as shortage of application forms, tedious manual submission of forms and long wait for their applications to be screened and approved.ADVERTISEMENT Expressing full support for the move mooted by party President Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, she said: "Najib has made a timely and wise move. The online system is fully compatible with the younger generation who are information technology (IT) savvy and can just even use their smart phones to submit their membership applications to the party."The system suits the current trend and relieves the worries and apprehension among the grassroots who feel it is difficult and cumbersome to become an Umno member as some have to refill the membership forms several times due to strict screening," she said.Rosnah said this to reporters when met after attending a pre-Umno Supreme Council meeting chaired by Najib in conjunction with the Umno General Assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), here. ADVERTISEMENT Najib, who is Umno President, had stressed the importance of Umno wooing more professionals and young people to join the party. Thus, he wanted the Umno membership application to be streamlined through the online system and approved by the Umno headquarters compared to the previous system where approval was at the divisional level, following several problems that cropped up previously such as the application being rejected due to the loss of application forms.

Rosnah, who was formerly national Umno Puteri chief, said the online system was used by the Puteri wing 10 years ago and was proven to be effective in registering new members, but it was later reverted to the manual system. Currently, Rosnah said, the process starts from bottom up where new applications would be sent from the branch to the division and State level, and lastly to the party headquarters."The online system has thus cut out the unnecessary red tape as applications would be directly sent to the party headquarters," she said.Ranau Umno Youth Chief Faez Einstein Nordin also welcomed the system, saying it would ease the registration of young people, especially professionals, as members of the party. He described the move as a timely transformation of the party towards attracting youths to join the party.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
