KUALA LUMPUR: If the Sedition Act 1948 were to be amended or improved, the Government should maintain the main provisions that prohibit and permit punishment of seditious speeches or behaviour. Umno Youth Chief Umno Khairy Jamaluddin said the provisions were power and shields, not only for Malays, but also for the general Malaysian public.

"If anybody dares to cross the line and insult the Malays or Malay Rulers, Umno Youth will insist that the culprit be charged immediately. If the insult were on other races, Umno Youth will also be at the front line to insist that action be taken against the culprit.

"Whatever that is being done on the Sedition Act and whatever name given to it later, we want the power in it to be maintained and become the shields for all of us," he said in his policy speech at the Umno Youth Assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre, here, Wednesday.

On efforts to improve national language proficiency, Khairy said vernacular schools could be continued, but something should be done to strengthen national unity through the use of the national language.

"Make sure that students in vernacular schools are proficient in national language. Be part of the integration process, don't be isolated from the rest of the society," he said.

Khairy said despite certain voices questioning the existence of vernacular schools, Umno leadership had accepted its existence as enshrined in the country's law for so long.

Even the Prime Minister, who is also Umno President, when tabling the National Budget, was firm in giving special allocation for vernacular schools, he added. – Bernama
