Top UMS student despite tough family background
KOTA KINABALU: Having a tough family background did not stop Christopher Pok Yong Hao from becoming Universiti Malaysia Sabah's (UMS) best student for 2014.The 23-year-old Malacca-born received first-class honours for his Bachelor in Sport Science degree at the recent 16th UMS Convocation here.

He said that since his father suffered a stroke in 2010, his mother became the sole breadwinner of the family.

"Being the eldest of three, I tried to help out the family by having part-time jobs during school holidays since I was in secondary school. Although I didn't receive much, at least I could help ease some of my mother's burden."

Christopher is also part of the Reserve Officers Training Unit (Palapes) Sea, an uniformed team trained by the Royal Malaysian Navy.

"We were taught the importance of time management as well as activities that build high self-discipline. I will treasure my experience in Palapes. It had helped me so much during my study.

"As members, we were given allowance which I used for my provision throughout my study in UMS," he said.

Christopher also received recognition at the 33rd Palapes Royal Cadet Accreditation Ceremony held at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Perak where he was awarded the Best Academic Award for Palapes UMS.

"I am grateful to all my friends and lecturers in UMS who have constantly been supportive and have taught me so much. My whole success is dedicated to my mother who has done so much for me and our family."
