KUALA LUMPUR: United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) wants Malaysia Day on every Sept 16 to be celebrated as an important and sacred day by all Malaysians, instead of just as another public holiday. Its Acting President Datuk Wilfred Madius Tangau said Malaysia Day, the day when Sabah, Sarawak and the Federation of Malaya formed the country, needs to be celebrated throughout the nation and at all major cities and towns, particularly in the nation's capital, and not just in Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.

"Upko maintains its stand that Sept 16 is not just a public holiday but an important and sacred day for Malaysian citizens that needs to be celebrated throughout the country, especially the nation's capital, and not just in Kuching and Kota Kinabalu," said the Tuaran MP.

Madius said this in response to Prime Minister and Umno President Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak who touched on the need to maintain the country's independence date of Aug 31 for solidarity in his policy speech at the Umno General Assembly in Putra World Trade Centre, here, Thursday.

Najib had said that Malaysia was formed on Sept 16 not by a purpose, as it was due to delays in the United Nations administration, and that whatever it is the date Sept 16 was still made a public holiday.

On Najib's point on Malaysia's handling of the Lahad Datu incursion last year which showed the country was on the right track as Malaysians from both the peninsula and Sabah and Sarawak fought together then, Madius said all should remember that security personnel from Sabah and Sarawak had also defended the sovereignty of states in the peninsula from the threat of communists previously.

"Upko would like to request, in the name of solidarity, that more people of Sabah and Sarawak be recruited as military and police personnel so we can defend the nation's sovereignty and people's security together," he said.

On the Sedition Act which Najib said would remain but with a bit of amendment, Madius said Upko has no problem with it and will support if the amendment to be made to this Act would include that those who insult any religion can be charged and taken action against, and that the enforcement of the amended Act would be in courteous manner and non-biased.

Upko had before this requested the Prime Minister to fulfil his promise to repeal this Act, he said.

On the Bumiputera Agenda and Bumiputera economic uplifting, Madius said the party, in supporting the Bumiputera Agenda and the effort to uplift the Bumiputera economy, hopes that this is being done without causing anyone among the Bumiputera community to be treated as first-class or second-class, or worse third-class, Bumiputera.

"Upko wants the 1Malaysia concept to be made as the principle for 1Bumiputera.

We do not want that just because of differences in religion and ethnicity there are members of the Bumiputera community feeling marginalised and discriminated in getting business opportunities, as well as in getting posts and promotions at the State and Federal public services," he said.
