SHAH ALAM: Selangor opposition leader Datuk Mohd Shamsudin Lias, who received a new Toyota Camry worth RM200,000 from the State Government, described the move as a step in the right direction. The Umno Sungai Burong assemblyman denied rumours he was in favour of policies set by Pakatan Rakyat (PR).

He said he did not betray Barisan Nasional (BN) when he accepted the state government's offer to bear the costs of fuel, and the salaries of a driver and secretary totalling RM100,424 annually.

Shamsudin will also be receiving a monthly RM3,000 special allocation by the state government in his capacity as state opposition leader. "If they (Pakatan Rakyat) were in the same position as me, they too would enjoy the same perks. I am still loyal and will carry out my duties as a BN assemblyman accordingly," he said.

"It shows healthy democracy and I am willing to work with the state government to ensure there is check and balance in the state." Shamsudin also welcomed the decision by the State Government to allocate RM200,000 annually for BN assemblymen in the state next year to carry out programmes in their constituencies.

"This has never been the practice of the previous administration and this allocation will certainly help us facilitate our programmes better," he said.

Shamsudin said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had also enjoyed such benefits in his capacity as Permatang Pauh MP and as such, it was not wrong for him and other BN assemblymen to accept an allocation from the state government as it was meant to facilitate help extended to the "rakyat".

The additional allocation for the 12 Umno assemblymen in the state was announced by Selangor Mentri Besar Azmin Ali during the tabling of the 2015 state budget at the state assembly yesterday.

During the sitting, Azmin revealed PR assemblymen would each receive an allocation of RM700,000, an increase of RM100,000 from the sum allocated by former Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim.

"This allocation is part of the move to improve local representative services and create a sense of democracy where the people's needs are prioritised," he said.

He announced the state government had also decided to review salary increases for the menteri besar, speaker, deputy speaker and exco members under the previous administration.

Azmin revealed the allocation for Khalid, who is also Port Klang assemblyman, would not be handed directly to him but instead be channelled through the state liaison officer.
