Retired judge gets pat for role in law seminar

KOTA KINABALU: Dato' Wira Low Hop Bing, a retired Court of Appeal judge, is the epitome of judicial integrity and dedication.Organising Chairperson of the Alumni Fellowship Dinner cum Seminar on Law in our Daily Life, Serena Liew, described him as well known for his good temperament in court."Low is the most patient and courteous judge that I have ever known. Before his retirement two years ago, he had contributed to the effectiveness and efficiency of the Malaysian judicial system. ADVERTISEMENT "He has always been passionate about educating the young lawyers in talks in the universities and seminars and for law practitioners in Malaysia," she said in her welcoming address.Saying Low had no hesitation to be the guest speaker, Liew said: "I was so touched by his heart for the Chinese schools."She made a vote of thanks to the retired judge for his contribution towards the seminar. The event was jointly organised by Sabah Tshung Tsin Alumni Association and the Amicus Curiae Legal Group (Amicus Curiae means a Friend of Court).ADVERTISEMENT Through the effort of seniors, Amicus Curiae Legal Group was born in July this year, according to Liew. The motto of Amicus Curiae, she said, is to connect, cooperate with one another and to contribute to the school and the community.

"Our ultimate objective is to make our homeland a better place to live in and to lead our members to a better and progressive future."Within three days, we had gathered about 50 lawyers to join our group. Within a month, we had launched our first book donation campaign for the school library. "We received positive response from the alumni and are very grateful to Sweet & Maxwell Malaysia for their generosity in donating more than RM3,000 worth of law books to our library," she said.Sweet & Maxwell Malaysia, a Thomson Reuters' subsidiary, is one of the region's foremost legal information providers for businesses and legal professionals in Asia.Alumnus Dr Lim Kim Hwa, now a research scientist of National University of Singapore, also flew in from Singapore to speak on Satellite Imaging and Remote Sensing.
