KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has called for the establishment of the Asean Ministerial Meeting on Anti-Corruption to ensure that holistic and coordinated corruption prevention initiatives could be planned at the regional level. In making the proposal, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Paul Low noted that currently there was no specific ministerial portfolio in other Asean governments on good governance and integrity, especially in combating graft.

Low, who handles the good governance and human rights portfolio, said ministerial-level meetings involving ministers from all 10 Asean members would display the political will of all the states in handling issues of corruption, good governance and integrity.

"I don't have any similar counterparts from Asean countries holding the ministerial portfolio responsible for promoting good governance, integrity and human rights. I encourage the heads of government to appoint a minister of similar portfolio."

Low said this in his opening remarks at the 10th Annual Meeting of the Southeast Asia Parties to the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation for Preventing and Combating Corruption (SEA-PAC) which began, here, Monday.

The minister pointed out that it was vital to bring the ministers together to share experiences and build capacity, especially that of emerging Asean economies to effectively deal with corruption at the regional level.

The three-day meeting, hosted by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, is aimed at strengthening cooperation among member countries to fight cross-border corruption more effectively.

It is being attended by representatives of corruption prevention and investigation authorities from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Singapore, Cambodia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Malaysia. – Bernama
