KOTA KINABALU: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Youth Secretary David Ong supported the call by Barisan Nasional Youth Chief Hafez Yamani Musa to request the Education Ministry to investigate claims of religious discrimination in a school in Keningau."Malaysia's constitution makes the country a secular state and guarantees freedom of religion to every individual in our multiracial and multi-religious society.

"It is against the law for schools to have policy which disallows students from wearing the Crucifix to school because of their religion or belief.

"This is religious discrimination and is totally unacceptable," he said in a statement.

Ong also called on the ministry to ensure no victimisation happens to students whose parents reported the incident to the relevant authority.

"Teachers, as professionals, are engaged in one of the most ethically demanding jobs, the education of young people. Thus, teachers need to constantly reflect on their activities to ensure that in their work, they exhibit the best ethical example possible to those they are morally educating.

"The ministry and school management should ensure no victimisation happens to students who complained about the incident," he said.

Meanwhile, Ong also welcomed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's decision to retain the Sedition Act 1948, which he said helps in maintaining a peaceful Malaysia.

"It is the right decision when there is an increasing trend by irresponsible individuals inciting racial and religious tensions in the country.

"However, a good citizen does not need to fear the Sedition Act as it has no power over a law abiding individual. We hope the Government will take action against individuals who make seditious statements to jeopardise the peace here.

"Inaction by the Government will mean that the Sedition Act is just an Act which serves no purpose," he said.
