20 Forestry staff praised for bravery
LAHAD DATU: The Sabah Forestry Department has awarded 20 staff from its office in Ulu-Segama-Malua (USM) here with 'Certificates of Bravery' for assisting the police to track down a murder suspect inside a forest reserve here, last month.Its Director Datuk Sam Mannan commended the brave action of the 20 staff and called on them to maintain the excellent performance so that can be exemplary to other personnel in the department.

"An Indonesian man who worked as a supervisor in Syarikat Restorasi was killed in the workers' quarters at Compartment 110, Bukit Piton Forest Reserve (USM), here at 6.3oam on Nov 14.

"Initial police report showed that the supervisor was ambushed and attacked by the suspect who was armed with a parang until the supervisor died. The suspect was a new employee of the company.

"The victim's wife was also attacked and suffered injuries together with another worker who were later sent to the hospital by our staff to be treated," he said.

Mannan presented the certificates to the 20, including officers, in conjunction with thanksgiving ceremony of Centennial Forestry Conference (CFC), Heart of Borneo (HoB) and 17th Malaysian Forestry Conference at the department's headquarters in Sandakan.

On the same day, Mannan said the USM forestry officers and a group of personnel from the same office helped the police search and track down the suspect who escaped into the nearby forest.

He said the staff successfully captured the suspect, an Indonesian, around 8.30pm on Nov 14 and handed him over to the police at Estate Hiranky (Kwantas) for further action.
