KOTA KINABALU: Fifteen cars were destroyed when a fire tore through two automobile repair workshops, resulting in about RM2.5 million in damages, at the Nountun Industrial Estate in Inanam, Tuesday.Sabah Fire and Rescue Zone Head 1, Hamsa Isnurdini, said 31 firemen and four fire engines were dispatched to the scene after receiving a distress call at 1.13pm.

"We arrived at the scene at 1.20pm and were able to control the fire by 1.47pm from spreading further and totally put out the fire by 1.55pm.

"Fifteen cars were burnt in the fire, which started initially from one workshop and rapidly spread to the other. Luckily, firefighters were able to control the fire in time so it did not spread to the neighbouring workshop.

"The fire resulted in one of the workshops being totally destroyed while the other only partially," he said.

The operation only ended at 4.31pm.

Chong Yun Choi, 48, the owner of one of the workshops, said when he saw the fire, he immediately ordered his workers to move the cars away from the workshop.

Meanwhile, he said they also tried to slow down the fire using extinguishers but it grew too rapidly for them to save all the cars in time, which consequently destroyed seven cars, including luxury cars.

Only about 20 cars were saved from the fire. There was no reported loss of life in the fire and the cause is still under investigation.
