CAMERON HIGHLANDS: Despite widespread publicity on unlawful land clearing, some illegal settlers have the audacity in wanting to hold "discussions" with the authorities.Cameron Highlands Joint Operations Commander ACP Mohd Shaharuddin Baharom said while efforts were being made to cleanse illegal farms and demolish its buildings and assets, the illegal settlers still wanted to meet for "discussions".

"Before this, some had said our work was inconsistent and was just for show.

Do not come to us for discussions, we do not have the authority to hold talks. We are here to carry out orders," he told reporters during the second phase of 'Ops Gading' at illegal flower farms in Blue Valley here.

He said the illegal settlers should discuss with the Land and District Office or the Land and Mines Office.

"We are not here for talks but to carry out clean-up operations and demolition of assets in the illegal farms. If they want to talk, talk to other parties," he said.

Mohd Shaharuddin said the second phase of 'Ops Gading' would be conducted for one week, with almost 20 hectares of flower, vegetable and fruit farms in Kampung Raja, Tringkap and Blue Valley covered today.

"All structures and assets on the illegal farms were demolished. These farms have been operating for more than a year. We demolished them instantly.

"The operation was carried out on the instructions of the Cabinet," he said, adding that all illegal farms in Cameron Highlands would be demolished during 'Ops Gading'.

In the first phase, 17 hectares of illegal farms were demolished and according to data from the Remote Sensing Agency, there were 7,000 hectares of illegal farms in Cameron Highlands.

The second phase of the joint operations is headed by the National Security Council and involves 16 agencies, including the civil defence, immigration, environment and forestry departments, Rela, police and the army. – Bernama
