"We are pleased to note the increase and this augurs well for the homestay programme development. We will continue to promote the homestay programme," she said.

Asmidar said the Labuan Homestay Carnival aimed at promoting the three homestay venues would continue to be held. She said efforts were on the cards to assist operators to upgrade existing facilities and help promote better understanding of the various aspects of rural life that makes village culture unique among the tourists.

"This programme gives locals and foreign tourists the chance to witness socio-cultural and artistic customs, taste sumptuous home-cooked food, and discover the simple lifestyle in the countryside," she said.

Labuan Corporation Tourism and Culture Director Mahathir Abd Hamid said collaboration with the ministry was in the pipeline and it had drawn up plans to further develop the homestay programme to involve the Labuan Homestay Association and fishermen.

"This socio-economic programme has proven to be an income-generating sector for the villagers as well as for local fisherman. As such, we will further develop this programme," he said.
