KOTA KINABALU: The price of RON95 and diesel should be reduced by at least 50 sen following the plunge in oil prices in the global market.Sabah DAP Chairman Jimmy Wong said if the Government had said that they were forced to increase fuel prices because of high oil prices in the global market, the same reason should be used to decrease the fuel price now.

He added that such move would help ease the burden of the people who have been heavily hit by increasing prices of food, increased electricity tariffs and pricey transportation costs.

"I assure you, if the price go down, you will be helping the domestic economy a lot.

"Earlier today I went to Kampung Air and I saw many restaurants were empty even though it was lunchtime. This is unprecedented. It shows that consumers are heavily burdened," he said during a press conference here, Wednesday.

At the same time, he said, AirAsia should lead the way in reducing the price of air fares by offering cheaper seats for Sabahans to go to Kuala Lumpur and other destinations.

Not long ago, said Wong, one could travel to Kuala Lumpur with only RM100 but now it is extremely difficult if not impossible to get the same deal, with oil prices constantly blamed for the more expensive air fares.

Wong also pointed out that SESB should reduce the electricity tariffs by 20 per cent right away.

"The price of petrol and diesel had gone down so much but, at the same time, our electricity tariffs have gone up. They said it is only 16 per cent but in our actual bills, it had actually gone up by 100 per cent.

"To add salt to the wound, SESB had not improved their service. We keep getting blackouts even after the tariffs have been increased," he said.

Meanwhile, Wong expressed his shock over the announcement by Inanam Assemblyman Dr Roland Chia who wrote in his Twitter account that he is stepping down as Inanam Assemblyman, citing health reasons.

"It must be a very serious health problem and we pray that he will have a speedy recovery.

"It is quite saddening to hear of his decision but as a member of the opposition, I would like to urge him to keep fighting. Don't give up so fast and so easily.

"There have been many MPs and Assemblymen who fell sick after they were elected but they kept fighting for the people. I would urge Roland to do the same," he said.
