KUALA LUMPUR: Work on a total of 205 Federal goverment projects costing RM7 billion are behind schedule.MInister in the prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim said that as of this month, 82 of the projects valued at RM2.2 billion have been classified as " Project Sakit" (ailing projects).

A project is defined as in an ailing state if it is two months late or the progress is 20pc behind the initial schedule date of completion and the contractor is unable to improve his performance, he said.

"Among the reasons for a project being delayed are weak management by contractors, problem in getting building materials and lack of workers.

"As a proactive measure to overcome the situation, the "Jawatankuasa Projek Sakit" (Ailing Projects Committee) was established to identify and take comprehensive rehabilitation measures on such ailing projects," he said in reply to a question by Senator Datuk Lihan Jok who wanted to know the number of Federal government projects which have been abandoned nationwide, the value and immediate action being taken.

Shahidan said so far there were no government projects that were categorised as abandoned.

Meanwhile, Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Deputy Minister Datuk Tajuddin Abdul Rahman has urged chefs, especially those at hotels, to assist the government to promote freshwater fish dishes to tourists.

Such assistance would not only encourage consumption of freshwater fish among tourists but also change the perception of some that the fish was meant only for rural folks or those from the lower income group, he added.

"We need chefs to assist us in informing the public about the protein content of freshwater fish so that tourists understand and become interested to consume them.

"This will reduce the financial burden of the government and save cost for the people, in promoting the fish," he said this in reply to Senator Khairiah Mohamed who wanted to know the extent of the government's efforts to promote freshwater fish consumption, especially at hotels.
