KOTA KINABALU: A 21-year-old Filipino Visaya man who intended to jump from the fifth floor of a shopping complex in Penampang last week, will serve 10 months in prison for attempted suicide.Magistrate Faiz Omar sentenced unemployed Brandon Deo Campo, after he admitted to committing the offence at 6.40am on Dec 13, at Megalong in Donggongon.In meting out the sentence, Faiz told Brandon that such action was not a solution to any problem and hoped the sentence would be a lesson to him not to commit a similar offence in the future.

Faiz said he had considered all factors, including the frequency of the offence which was not only against the law, but also against religion."This is not only a lesson to you but also to the society that committing suicide is not a solution to any problem. It affects your family and would leave a stigma in the society," said Faiz to Brandon.
Brandon, who was not represented, requested to be freed and promised that he would not commit similar offence in future. However, Inspector Syahin Ali, prosecuting, urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence taking into consideration the rate of suicide nowadays with two such incidents occurring in the city within this month, namely in Kg Air and at the Centre Point Sabah building.Earlier, Syahrin told the court that police went to the said place after receiving a call from public reporting a man was trying to commit suicide.

The police saw the man, later identified as Brandon, sitting on the ledge of fifth floor and managed to dissuade him and pulled him in.Investigations revealed that at that time, Brandon had an intention to commit suicide as he was facing family problems.

Brandon was charged under Section 309 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to one year or fine or both on conviction.In another case, a 42-year-old mechanic, who pleaded guilty to assaulting his neighbour, will know his fate on Jan 16 next year after the availability of the victim's medical report.Ng Kin Hin admitted to voluntarily causing hurt to one Hiew Jing Kui, 42, at 5pm on Dec 13 at Kg Kitobu, Jalan Inanam.

He is facing a jail term of up to one year or fine of up to RM2,000 or both if convicted under Section 323 of the Penal Code.The court offered Ng bail at RM3,000 in two sureties pending the date with a condition that he must not approach Hiew in any way.
