Foundation gives away school aid to 703 Labuan students

LABUAN: Some 703 students received brand new schoolbags and a token of RM100 each as part of the Labuan Back2School programme under the Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan (YWP).This was the second year running YWP in collaboration with Umno Labuan handed out assistance to defray the costs of buying schoolbags and stationeries before the start of the new school year, benefiting families of lower income group.Before giving away the aid to the students, Member of Parliament Datuk Rozman Isli reminded the recipients that the only way to escape the cycle of poverty is through education.

"Give importance to your education to help your families move up the socio-economic ladder," he told the assembly.The programme, though organised by Umno, other communities were not left out through other BN component parties represented in Labuan.MIC Labuan chief R Ramasamy praised the move as inclusive in line with the spirit of 1Malaysia. He said Umno was not selfish in looking after the interests and well-being of all irrespective of race and religion."MIC has identified students whose parents are in the police and armed forces and those working at the lower rung of the private sector.

MCA would give their allocation through the two Chinese schools on the island as the respective school authorities were in a better position to distribute the assistance.
