Unilever Food Solutions likely to maintain product prices ahead of GST

JOHOR BAHARU: Unilever Food Solutions Malaysia (UFSM) will likely maintain its product prices ahead of the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) next April. "We are currently studying the trends. "In terms of pricing, we expect there will be not much change, it could probably remain or decrease slightly, and any changes will be announced by the end of February or March," National Sales Manager Eric Chong told reporters after the launch of the Chefmanship Academy here Sunday.

In response to a question on changes to product prices with the GST implementation, Chong said the general trends could only be seen after six months of implementation.

"Definitely, we are not going to profiteer. We are not going to make any profit post-GST, and any cost-saving will be passed back to consumers," he said.

Among Unilever food products in Malaysia are Wall's, Lipton, Knorr, Lady's Choice and Planta, while its non-food products include Dove, Lux, Clear, Lifebuoy, Ponds, Breeze, Ekonomi Handalan, Sunsilk, Fair & Lovely and Rexona.

The programme was introduced last year, and the company hopes over time to reach some 250,000 petty traders nationwide, teaching them modules such as food operating costs, profit optimisation and creative presentation of fresh and quality food products.

Participants also get insights and factual knowledge on how to improve food handling, save time, operate cost-effectively and the latest industry developments and regulatory requirements.

Meanwhile, Johor Baharu City Council (MBJB) Chief Whip Datuk Yahya Jaafar said the iniative would further assist the food operators to carry out their operations more systematically and efficiently.

Last year, MBJB inspected 873 food premises of which only 134 were graded A, while 386 premises were graded B and the remainder C and D.
