196 foreigners nabbed in joint ops

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police have detained 196 foreigners forvarious immigration offences in four separate raids in Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) early Sunday.SPT District Police Chief ACP Rusli Mohd Noor said those who were detained included 144 Myanmar people (including three children and four women), 25 from Nepal, 19 Bangladeshis, six Indonesians and two women from Vietnam.

"All of them failed to show valid travel documents, do not have work permits or have stayed beyond the permitted period," he said in a statement, here Sunday.

He said all the foreigners, aged between nine and 40 years, were taken to the SPT District Police Headquarters for further investigation.

He said the seven-hour joint operations ended at 5 am, involving 109 officers and 825 other ranks, and focused on monitoring the activities of foreign nationals in order to combat criminal activities within the group.

Rusli said at the same time, 1,956 vehicles were checked, including 841 motorcycles, 259 cars, 19 vans while the remainder were lorries and buses involving 1,403 drivers and passengers.

He said 77 summons notices were issued for various traffic offences, including speeding, illegal parking and driving without a licence. – Bernama
