Netizens told to help govt convey right, precise info

KOTA KINABALU: Avid users of social media network have been urged to help the government in disseminating right and accurate information that contributes to the development of Sabah and the country.Umno Sabah Puteri Chief Normala Rasil said the social media could not be perceived as a platform to vent anger, criticisms, slander and channeling negative news.That is why, she said she called on these active users of the social media to be more responsible when posting or spreading news and make sure those news benefit public.ADVERTISEMENT "The social media should complement government efforts in developing Sabah and the nation so as to smoothen implementation of various short-term and long-term development projects in the State and country," she said.Normala said this in her speech when opening a programme of 'Jom Santai Bersama Sabah Umno Puteri here on Sunday.Also present were its Vce Chief Zakiah Kalipunya and all divisional heads of Puteri in Sabah. In addition, Normal said the Barisan Nasional (BN) under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman have always recognise the roles play by the social media active users.ADVERTISEMENT "Nowadays, the young people often surf and browse the social media to get information and we are fully acknowledge the function and role of the social media. "Therefore, we should grab this facility and use this method to reach out to the people and relay their responses and feedback to the government to be looked into," she said.However, Normala said defaming and slandering people in cyber space seem to be common among the social media users who manipulate the digital technology to humiliate their target persons.

She said the worst fear would be when negative news involving influential and prime leaders including nation leaders, politicians and celebrities are fast spread like in a wink of an eye compared to positive information and news.She said there are many 'express reporters' exist in the social media network where their writings contain negative elements like slandering, humiliating and provoking appear to be normal situation for them."What we really worry is the rapid development of technology in social media that is often abuse by the irresponsible quarters aim to exploit and twist certain issues for personal agenda. "Among them are spreading false information, seditious information as well as touching on personal sensitivity and also those information that could be threatening national securities," she said.Following this, Normala said the wing has organised an IT and Social media course for all the wing members in Sabah to make the members more competent to become cyber army that could tackle and refute negative news and stop those dissemination of defamation news in the social media.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
