Minor fire causes panic at mall's food court
KOTA KINABALU: Patrons at a food court on the third floor of a shopping mall here had to cut their lunch short when smoke started to come out from the ducting system of one of the food stalls, Monday. A worker at the food court, who spoke on condition of anonymity, claimed that she was washing the dishes when she saw her colleagues running out of the premises at about 3pm.

"I found it strange for her to run out that way, prompting me to check what the commotion was and that was when I saw everyone rushing towards the exit," she said.

She said she did not hear any explosion but the smell of smoke prompted her to run towards the exit still holding the dirty dishes in both hands.

"I was frightened, memories of the fire which swept through my village in Kg. Numbak flashed through my eyes and all I could think of was to ran for safety," she said.

A Christmas shopper, Aries Henry said she also ran for safety when she saw a group of shoppers running for the door to escape in panic.

"I had no idea what happened but I heard the emergency fire alarm ringing and saw everyone running towards the exit," said Henry as she headed for home immediately.

City Police Chief ACP M.Chandra who arrived at the scene moments later said preliminary investigations showed that the minor fire was caused by a spark from the ducting system of one of the food stalls.

He said there was no elements of foul play.

The shopping complex resumed operation as normal at about 4pm with nobody hurt.

The fire was already put out by civilians by the time 17 personnel from the Kota Kinabalu Fire and Rescue Department led by its Operations Chief Azlan Liway Kamis arrived at the scene at about 3.25pm.
