Pasokmomogun needs the help of govt: Tangau
KOTA KINABALU: The Pasokmomogun communities can achieve Vision 2020 provided they get full support from the Government as they have what it takes to be on par with other Malaysians."The intent of the Pasokmomogun is to achieve our full potential, enjoy all the benefits and be at home under the Malaysian sun.... It is about being accorded our due as Malaysians. Nothing more, nothing less," said acting Upko President Datuk Madius Tangau.

"Yes, we do have people gifted with five talents, and two talents," he said, quoting a verse from the Holy Bible, but "the onus is on the government to assist us sincerely. The onus is on Putrajaya to tackle head on the Pasokmomogun eight lamentations."

The lamentations are: governance of citizenship, governance of land tenure, governance of upgrading infrastructure and basic rural facilities, education and the teaching of our mother tongue, freedom of religion, governance of civil services in Putrajaya and the Federal agencies in Sabah, and governance of oil royalty.

Tangau said this when asked to elaborate on his lecture entitled Vision 2020: The Pasokmomogun Persepective which he delivered last Friday at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

He said in the 13th general elections last year, the support from the Pasokmomogun to Barisan Nasional was only about 35 per cent, which was low compared with the 60 per cent given in the 2008 elections.

"Soon after taking over as the Upko leader (in March this year), I paid a courtesy call on our Prime Minister. We spoke about a few things but one of the topics which hit me like lighting was when he asked me: How can you and Upko help to increase the Pasokmomogun level of support to the ruling coalition?" he said.

Upko did some soul searching which resulted in identifying at least eight reasons as to why the Pasokmomogun turned their back on the government in a very significant swing.

"Thus, in my first presidential speech in front of the Prime Minister, the Chief Minister and the coalition dignitaries, I laid bare, during the Upko Convention 2014 last November 15 here, the Pasokmomogun lamentions which must be resolved soonest possible for they will consequently enable us to achieve our nation-of-intent, and consequently the Vision 2020," said Tangau.

Tangau added: "Twenty four years ago in 1991, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed had set up the yardstick for a developed nation. Current Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak added value by saying Malaysia aims to become a developed nation with high income. He also introduced the One Malaysia, People First, Performance Now.

"Lest we forget, the way forward for the country is to forge a united Malaysian nation. However, we must recognise the fact that while we are one state, there exists many nations-of-intent," he said, referring to a concept envisioned by one Prof AB Shamsul.

"It is imperative that in order to overcome all the nine strategic challenges of Vision 2020, particularly to achieve a united Malaysian Nation, the Pasokmomogun nation-of-intent must be respected," said Tangau who is also Tuaran MP.

He reiterated that Upko resolved "to be in the arena" with Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak who had shown he too had what it takes, in the next six years so, to make Vision 2020 a reality.

The lecture was moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr Farish A Noor. Also in attendance were Prof Dr Mohamed Nawab Mohamed Osman, senior fellow Dr Ei Sun Oh and Upko information chief Albert Bingkasan.
