Shoplifting: Mother with 4 previous convictions jailed

KOTA KINABALU: A local mother of two with four previous convictions was jailed 14 months for stealing 10 pieces of children's clothing worth RM411.60.Suriawati Ismail Chung admitted before Magistrate Mohd Faiz Omar to committing the offence at Servay supermarket in Likas, here, at 6.40pm on Dec 21 this year.

The court ordered Suriawati to serve the jail sentence from the date of her arrest. During mitigation, Suriawati asked for leniency, saying she has children to look after.

However, Inspector Syahrin Ali urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence on the grounds that Suriawati has four previous convictions for drug and theft.

Syahrin added that Suriawati had committed the offence while she was pregnant with her second child.

In the same court, two Filipinos were jailed for using a fake MyKad, respectively.

Jiezel Mendez, 28, was sentenced to a year's jail for using a MyKad bearing the serial number 880716-49-5139 at 4.50pm on Dec 21 in front of the Centre Point Sabah, here.

Nasri Malah, 27, was sent to prison for 15 months for using the document under his name bearing serial number 871109-12-5347 at 11.05pm on Dec 20 in front of the Masjid Jamek in Kg Likas, here.

They were also ordered to be referred to the Immigration Department after completing their jail sentences.

Meanwhile, in another case, a 30-year-old man, Mohamad Harizaman Said, was jailed a year for having a stolen motorcycle.

He committed the offence at 9.45pm on Dec 16 in front of the KDCA in Jalan Penampang.
