Labourer charged with supporting IS

SEPANG: A construction labourer was on Wednesday charged in the Sessions Court here on two counts of supporting the Islamic State (IS) militant group between December, 2013 and April, this year.Muhammad Kasyfullah Kasim, 36, was charged before Magistrate's/Sessions Court registrar Rozaidi Yaacob. No plea was recorded from him.

He appeared calm in the witness' stand and nodded, indicating that he understood the charges read out to him by the court interpreter.

Muhammad Kasyfullah was charged with entering Syria by departing from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, here, to support IS by being a member of the movement.

On the alternative charge, he is alleged to have committed acts of violence involving the use of firearms in pursuit of an ideological struggle that threatened the public in Syria.

The offences were allegedly committed between Dec 28, 2013 and April 7, 2014.

The charges against him were made under Section 130J of the Penal Code, which provides for life imprisonment or a jail term not exceeding 30 years, or with fine, and also be liable to forfeiture of any property used or intended to be used in committing the offence.

Judge Rozaidi fixed Feb 13, 2015 for case mention.

DPP Afzanizam Abdul Aziz appeared for the prosecution Wednesday while the accused was unrepresented. – Bernama
