Yahya: Mexico weed situation under control
KOTA KINABALU: The situation concerning the Mexico itchy weed or parthenium hysterophorus in the State is under control, said State Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Yahya Hussin."We are looking into it seriously and so far, no severe or unwanted cases have been reported," he said when asked on the matter during a "Gotong Royong Perdana" at Kampung Petagas, here, Sunday.

Mexico weed is a wild plant from South and North America that is said to be dangerous as it adversely affects the natural ecosystem, agricultural sector, livestock as well as human health.

Meanwhile, cleanliness was a major topic discussed at the event.

To illustrate his point on cleanliness, Yahya shared his experience in Singapore where a passer-by yelled at him when he was about to throw away his cigarette on the ground. "He was not even a police officer or any other person of authority. It all has to do with the society's mentality."

This, according to Yahya, was something that locals should adapt to and definitely emulate.

"Care enough to say something when you see someone about to throw rubbish. It is for your own good as being oblivious will cause more problems. The responsibility of being clean and staying clean should be shouldered by everyone.

"Stick your nose into people's business when it comes to maintaining cleanliness. Even if this may seem minuscule, gradually, it will welcome various types of unwanted illnesses and have a negative impact on one's life.

"Tackle the problem while it's still small." Also highlighted was the situation in Petagas where locals threw rubbish into the river.

Yahya urged relevant authorities in Petagas to be active in ensuring their cleanliness goals are met. He described it as an endless flow of rubbish as the cycle seems to be predictable.

"When the area gets cleaned, someone else mindlessly throws rubbish at the same spot again."

Meanwhile, an area that was used as a rubbish dumping ground was cleaned by villagers and others. A notice was put up reminding that a RM500 fine will be imposed if anyone is caught throwing rubbish in the area again.
