Kota Kinabalu: The sea curfew off six districts in the East Coast under the Eastern Sabah Safety Zone (Esszone) will be extended from Jan 10 until Jan 25. The districts are Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Lahad Datu, Kunak, Semporna and Tawau.State Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said the 7pm to 5am curfew extension for 16 days was necessary for security purposes under Section 31(1) of the Police Act 1967, adding that it was the 12th phase of the extended curfew order. He said this during a media conference held after attending the State police monthly gathering at Kepayan, here, Thursday. ADVERTISEMENT Jalaluddin said the curfew extension was also necessary to curb any possible attack and entry by kidnap-for-ransom group or Royal Sulu Force. "Based on intelligence, such groups are looking for our weaknesses and we also have information that they plan to target isolated police beats," he said. "We have also received information that there is a possibility of them trying to explode bombs in kiosk stations. Thus, we must never let our guard down," he added. He said these groups will always try to find the opportunity to enter the State and it is therefore appropriate for the curfew order to be extended. Earlier in his address, Jalaluddin noted that the State police contingent recorded a reduced crime index in 2014 compared to 2013 by 560 cases, while the number of solved cases recorded a total of 2,564 cases in 2014 compared to 2,789 cases in 2013.
