Secret Recipe fire scare at Suria

Kota Kinabalu: Quick thinking by security personnel saved a food outlet in Suria Sabah Shopping Complex here from further damage when its kitchen caught fire early Friday – the second such incident within a month. State Fire and Rescue Department Public Relations Officer Mohd Affendy K. Ramin said a team from the Kota Kinabalu Fire and Rescue Department arrived at the scene at about 1.12am after receiving a distress call. The fire was already put out by the security personnel by the time the team arrived. ADVERTISEMENT The operation ended 30 minutes later with nobody reported hurt. On Dec. 22, a minor fire was caused by a spark from the air vent of one of the food stalls in its food court on the third floor.In PITAS, the two-storey Pitas Umno office at Kg Kelumpang in Pekan Lama was destroyed on Thursday. It was learnt that the semi-permanent premises was rented by the district Unit Pemimpin Kemajuan Rakyat. Fendi said a team from the Kota Marudu Fire and Rescue Department rushed to the scene after receiving a call at about 7.36pm. They were assisted by police and personnel from the Civil Defense Department. The premises was completely destroyed by the time the fire was brought under control at about 8.40pm and no casualties were reported. The cause and total losses are still being determined. ADVERTISEMENT In Kota Belud, nine families comprising 35 fire victims received food necessities from the Kota Belud Umno Youth after fire destroyed their long-house in Kg Mengkabar Pituru Darat. The victims were not able to salvage their belongings in the 9.40pm fire, which spread quickly across the nine-door wooden long house on Wednesday. No casualties were reported.

It was believed to have started from a cooking gas cylinder in one of the long house units. However, the authorities are still investigating, including the estimated losses. Kota Belud Umno Youth Vice Chief Fadli Juanas and his committee members visited the site and donated assistance to the victims. Fadli reminded the local community to always be aware of safety usage of cooking gas including electrical appliances in their respective homes to avoid untoward incidents. He said wiring in every premise must be done according to the safety specifications approved by the Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd. (SESB). "Do not take wiring system safety lightly at home, particularly when adding or making modifications to the wiring system without getting prior approval from SESB," he added.
